One thought on “MA Creative Writing” THE EUROPEAN UNION MUST FIGHT FOR ITS CITIZENS We call upon the Council of the European Union to fiercely defend all the citizens of the Union in negotiation with any member state that seeks to leave the Union now or in the future; to preserve our citizenships and rights; to demonstrate the strength of our Union, for the assurance of all including, urgently, those of the United Kingdom whose deep attachment to the Union is without question. The Treaty of European Union promised “to strengthen the protection of the rights and interests of the nationals of its member states through the introduction of a citizenship of the Union” – rights conferred under Article 8. Millions of European Citizens in the UK are to be stripped of their citizenship, without their consent, and against their own deep wishes. Younger Britons voted overwhelmingly to keep their European identities intact. Those under the age of 18 were denied any say at all. If their story were to be repeated, yours too may be lost. We cannot allow this to happen. Hundreds of millions of people throughout the World and the European Union – including so very many Britons – have observed with profound sorrow the language, progress, and outcome of the recent referendum in the United Kingdom. On 23 June 2016 one half of those who voted in Britain elected to keep their EU citizenship, yet all will now lose it and with it the extraordinary freedoms granted by the Treaty on European Union, (the ‘Maastricht Treaty’, 1 November 1993), including the “freedom to move and reside freely within the member states”. Many further valuable rights and protections will also be lost. If other EU countries follow the UK’s path their nationals too may unwillingly suffer the same deep loss. Nationals of member states have celebrated the benefits of EU citizenship for 23 years in the justified expectation that it was theirs for life. For those born after 1 November 1993, the children of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, EU citizenship was given at birth, as was their national citizenship. For them, as for so many EU citizens, it is a part of their identity, essential and precious. We are appalled that any should now lose their EU citizenship without consent and against their will, based on the actions of a minority of the UK electorate – just 17.4 million voters, in a population of 65 million. As European Union citizens, young and old, but especially for the young, we ask the leaders of Europe to protect all of us now; to protect our rights and interests, to protect our citizenships, which once granted must not be rescinded. This petition will be delivered to: Council of the European Union LikeLike Reply Leave a Reply Cancel reply Enter your comment here...
